What is rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory condition which involves the skin on the face. It is characterised by redness/flushing (as well as small pustules) often on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. Rosacea can also affect the eyes causing redness and watering as well as other parts of the body such as the scalp and the back of the ears. If left untreated rosacea can lead to a build - up of tissue on the nose which may need surgical removal.

Who gets rosacea?

Rosacea is most common in adults over the age of 30. But can also occur in teenagers. The difference between rosacea and acne is that there are no blackheads with rosacea.

What causes rosacea?

Scientists are still unsure what exactly causes rosacea. They believe some of the following factors may contribute:
Genetics – more common in people who have a close relative with a history of rosacea
Abnormalities in blood vessels of the face which can cause blushing and redness
A skin mite – researchers believe that there may be a link to a common skin mite called demodex folliculorum

During the summer you may notice that your sun spots or pigmentation becomes more pronounced. Sunspots are also known as age spots. They are caused by excessive exposure to the sun and sometimes also by hormonal changes and ageing. At Body Essentials we recommend the use of a good skincare range that incorporates Vitamin A, such as Environ, and daily use of sunscreen.

How to minimise the appearance of sun spots and age spots on the skin :

• Wear a sunscreen which blocks both UVA and UVB. This is called a broad spectrum sunscreen. Dermalogica have a range of tinted and untinted sunscreens which provide protection from UVA and UVB rays. Body Essentials has a wide range of sunscreens available ranging from SPF 15 to SPF50. It is important to apply a generous amount and apply it regularly if you are active.

• Limit your exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

How to put together a skincare routine:

For best results it is important to follow a skincare routine both morning and night.

1. Your first step is to cleanse morning and night. Use a quality cleanser for removing makeup and a makeup remover if necessary. Environ has four different cleansers to suit all skin types. We suggest you don't put the cleanser directly onto your face , but place a small amount in your hands, add water and then apply to face. Work the cleanser into your face and neck. Leave it on your face for 30 seconds. This will enable any active ingredients to go to work on your skin. Rinse thoroughly and pat your face dry.

2. Use a toning lotion on your face and neck with a cotton wool ball. Our toners do not contain alcohol.

3. For daytime, apply your moisturiser, sunblock and makeup.

4. For your night time regime, after cleansing and toning, apply targeted serums and Vitamin A moisturiser. Environ has a range of moisturisers and serums which contain active ingredients such as peptides , vitamin A and vitamin C. The glands in the skin produce oil. The skin glands are stimulated by our adrenal glands. The glands of the skin produce an oily liquid deep within each follicle, which is known as sebum. Sebum keeps your skin moist, soft and supple. The sebum carries dead skin cells through hair follicles to the skin’s surface. Small hairs grow out of these follicles.

Vitamin A skincare products improve the health of your skin.

It was conclusively proven in 1996 that Vitamin A as a topical skin ingredient is capable of reprogramming cellular function

Can you use vitamin A when pregnant?

Environ have recently reviewed their protocol for topical use of Vitamin A during pregnancy.

In consultation with founder Dr Des Fernandes , Environ advises that topical products containing low levels of Vitamin A are safe to use during both pregnancy and lactation.

Once applied topically Vitamin A is trapped in our skin as we do not have the enzyme system needed to transfer it to the blood stream as happens with other vitamins such as vitamin C.

However, during the first trimester of pregnancy , it is possible that the skin's response to cosmetics may change due to fluctuating hormone levels. Therefore, should clients choose to continue with their Environ skincare regime, Environ recommends that clients revert to base levels 1 and 2 of either Youth Essentia and Skin Essentia.

Clients may also find it is more comfortable to keep to these levels throughout the pregnancy.

Vitamin A helps with skin elasticity and collagen production , helping to reduce stretch marks as the body grows. Vitamin A also helps to normalise pigmentation which can reduce the risk of hormonal pigmentation.
